At this moment Firefox has 11 open tabs, and there are 6 apps on the panel. I am in the habit of having many apps open at once. To get the app back I can start a new instance, or instead kill aqnd restart the app. Sometimes, as above, they don't reappear at all and don't show up with alt-tab, but do show up with ps aux. This lasts anywhere from a fraction of a second to 4 or 5 seconds. Sometimes all open windows disappear, but only desktop is visible. (Or the vlc window disappears, but the movie's sound track continues to play through the speakers.) Terminal command 'ps aux | grep "firefox" ' shows the app is still running, however. Since last linuxmint update, sometimes my running application simply disappears: firefox, or vlc. I'm running Linuxmint 17 lts cinnamon with all updates faithfully applied
